Chronicles the city's history of building in stone. Notes the surviving stone buildings built by master mason Benjamin Strange during the 1850s and 1860s and later buildings built with high quality basalt (or 'bluestone') said to have come from the J.J. Craig quarry (later Winstone's quarry). Mentions also the influence of the Garden City concept from England as it manifested in both Auckland and Christchurch.
