Mr Holcroft was born in 1902. He is the author of more than 20 published books, including early novels, essays, social histories and studies in literature. In 1946, he was appointed editor of the Southland Times and in 1949 he became editor of the Listener, a position he held for twenty years. He received an OBE in 1970 and an honourary doctorate of literature from Victoria University in 1976.
