Description

Colour tinted image of Akatarawa River, Upper Hutt showing surrounding countryside and a timber truss bridge crossing the river. The timber trusses were replaced by pre-stressed concrete beams in 1954. The Akatarawa bridge's central pier subsided by around a metre into the river bed on October 29, 2015, during a flood, cutting off 62 Bridge road houses. A much longer three-span bridge of similar construction crossed the Hutt River at the southern end of Bridge Road.
