Description

Maoribank Tunnel; west portal. Photographed in January 1995. This tunnel provides rail access from Maoribank to the Mangaroa Valley. Work on boring the tunnel commenced in October 1953; it was holed through in August 1954 and completed - apart from tracklaying - in December 1954. Its length is 26.77 chains - 1767 feet - 538.58 metres. The section of line on which the tunnel is situated - part of the Rimutaka Deviation - was opened on 3 November 1955.
