Description

Six of the Wairarapa-class railcars, popularly known as 'Tin Hares' and numbered Rm 4 - Rm 9, were built at New Zealand Government Railways' Hutt workshops and entered service in 1936/1937. Rm 5 is owned by Silver Stream Railway Inc. and is currently (2014) being restored by the Pahiatua Railcar Society. The railcars seated 49 and their rear wheels were unusually large to ensure that the engine, mounted beneath the floor, had clearance from the centre rail of the Rimutaka Incline. In March 19...
