The whole picture was first printed on August 21, 1974; the city had a new mayor, Doris Nicholson, who found her mayoral duties a full-time occupation; she had asked Joan to act as her deputy and mayoress. It reappeared in the June 14, 1977 'Leader' when 31 upper-valley residents received Queen's Jubilee Medals. In that year's council election she came fourth to Rex Kirton, who was elected mayor.
