He had served in Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Italy, and after the War in Japan, where a senior police officer presented him with the sheathed dagger he is holding. He retired in 1967 after 2 years as a colonel. A greyscale image was printed in the 'Leader' on March 3, 1987.
