Peter Beaven was among Christchurch's leading modernist architects. He distinguished himself by his whimsical designs, including the Lyttelton Road Authority Building. It was constructed in the brutalist idiom of modernism and featured sculptural, nautical-like forms. This led to the building being dubbed Canterbury's 'fifth ship' – a reference to the first four ships that brought settlers to the region in 1850.
