Bands march in the Grand Parade of massed bands at the Waipū Highland Games in 2012. Caledonian Society gatherings and Highland Games around the country played an important part in the development of New Zealand's pipe bands. Waipū in Northland was a settlement of Highlanders established in 1854. The Waipu Highland Pipe Band was formed around 1901.
