In May 1840, four rangatira signed the Waitangi sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. Claudia Orange has suggested the signing was in the second week of May (possibly 13 May), while Erima Henare, a descendant of Te Ruki Kawiti, suggests the signing took place on 20 May.
