Description

Cultural go-betweens can provide entirely new ways of seeing places and concepts. This unfamiliar version of New Zealand's coastline was drawn in 1793 by the northern chief Tuki for the governor of New South Wales. It shows the world that Tuki knew, with Poenammo (the South Island) on the bottom, and Ea-hei-no-Maue (the North Island), where he lived, much larger. The double dotted line running through the North Island marks the path of the spirits of the dead to their final jumping-off place ...
