In 1979 Gretchen Albrecht left New Zealand to travel in Europe. She returned thirteen months later to what she openly describes as her ‘year of struggle’.1 First-hand experience of European art, particularly Renaissance painting and architecture, prompted a significant shift in her artistic practice.
