Description

In 1979 Gretchen Albrecht left New Zealand to travel in Europe. She returned thirteen months later to what she openly describes as her ‘year of struggle’.1 First-hand experience of European art, particularly Renaissance painting and architecture, prompted a significant shift in her artistic practice. She moved away from representation towards abstraction, producing semi-circular hemisphere paintings that recalled the intricate lunettes, carved arches and vaulted ceilings seen on her travels. ...
