Soils of the Kohumaru suite in the regional soil maps of Northland (Sutherland et al. 1981-83) are developed in predominantly clayey alluvium derived from basic and intermediate rocks. Soils of this suite were recognised on floodplains and terraceland within valley systems adjacent to basaltic and andesitic massifs.
