Ainslie remembers that her mother, Gertrude Smaill, wore the coat in the 1950s when the family lived on a farm in Otago. The bracelet length sleeve was fashionable at this time and allowed for accessories such as elbow length gloves and jewellery to feature as part of the ensemble.
