Description

Red deer are present throughout the range of the takahe and competition arises as both animals prefer the same plants (Chionochloa). Recent studies have shown that deer food preferences have changed and little competition exists in high alpine grasslands. This report examines the winter diet of deer from rumen samples. It was found that the fern Hypolepis millefolium which is favoured by takahe is not eaten by deer but it was not possible to establish whether food preferences overlap. (auth)
