Footrot Flats', by Murray Ball, was a long-running comic strip; farmer Wal Footrot; his Aunt Dolly, from whose refuge had come the dog, with a name he refused to accept; neighbour Couch Windgrass, girlfriend 'Cheeky' Hobson, and an indomitable cat called 'Horse', among the characters.
