Bastion Point
A DigitalNZ Story by DigitalNZ
On 5 January 1977 Takaparawhā (Bastion Point reserve) was occupied by Ngāti Whātua protesters. Led by Joe Hawke, this group maintained that the land had been wrongly taken from them and the Crown's plan for housing development was illegal. Protestors were evicted by police after 506 days.
