Fluvio-glacial landforms in the Nigger Valley have 3 main vegetation systems: (a) bog pine woodland with intervening deflated bare ground; (b) swamps, and kettle holes with turfy margins; (c) Festuca matthewsii grassland. Both (a) and (b) are biologically important as diverse examples of similar systems scattered through eastern inland South Island. Observations on flammability of common woody species are recorded.
