Map of Australasia as seen by Abel Tasman on his two Pacific voyages of 1642-3 and 1644. On the first voyage he followed the 40th parallel east to Tasmania and on to 'discover' New Zealand, mapping Cape Egmont and the top of the South Island as one landmass as he did not sail through what is now called Cook Strait. On the second voyage Tasman followed the south coast of New Guinea eastward. He missed the Torres Strait between New Guinea and Australia, continued on south, then voyaged westward...
