- Description
mask worn at dances. worn with Eth 8354 and 8355. Barkcloth mask, painted free-hand. This mask is part of an unusual costume which was collected in Rarotonga, probably at Arorangi village. For a short period at the end of the 19th and early in the 20th century, Cook Islanders from Mangaia and Rarotonga wore tapa costume for certain ritual ceremonies. These tapa masks, or pare eva, are rare examples of the few places in Polynesia where masks were used.
