Opened 1867 as Whau on the Oakley Estate at Point Chevalier. Known as the Auckland Mental Hospital from 1905. Then known as Oakley, then as Carrington. Notable medical men include Thomas Aickin (1869-79); John Cremonini (1886-89); Gary Hansell (1890-94); Robert Martin Beattie (appointed 1897).
