- Description
Kokako are a threatened endemic New Zealand bird species. They thrive in areas where mammalian predators (rats, stoats, possums, etc.) are killed off. They are being gradually reintroduced to former parts of their range in areas where predators have been removed, such as here in the East Cape. Pictured are Robin (NZ Herald photographer) and Sarah (Department of Conservation).
