Description

Taihape was originally a small clearing in the bush in the Rangitikei Valley. The original name of the town was Otaihape, meaning “The place of Tai the Hunchback”. William Colenso was the first European to visit the area in 1845, and the first settlers arrived from Canterbury in 1894. By 1897 there were 96 Europeans in the area. A sawmill was established in the early 1890s and the railway in November of 1904. By 1906 Taihape had become a Borough and in 1911 there were 1800 residents
