The Palmerston North Volunteer Fire Brigade was established in 1883. Shown here is the first proper fire station, which was located in Coleman Place and in use from the late 1880s to 1910, when a new brick Fire Station was constructed in Cuba Street. On the upstairs windows of this building can be seen “Circulating Library”, a reminder that the Fire Brigade operated a lending Library at a time when there was not a Public Library provided by the Borough Council.
