- Description
Alexander Thomas Harris. The Harris family went to Kawau Island in 1845 to take charge of a store for the Aberdeen Company, as a facility for the miners, and stayed on the island as caretakers after mining operations closed down. Managing the island for Sir George Grey (who bought it in 1862), Alexander Harris was the first postmaster on the island when the Post Office opened a branch there in 1868. A position his son-in-law, Thomas Osborne, was to later take over.
