During the opening ceremony of the 1950 British Empire games, New Zealand javelin thrower, Stan Lay, gives the oath on behalf of competing athletes that they will compete 'in the true spirit of sportsmanship and for the honour of the Empire and for the glory of sport'. The flag bearers of all competing nations stand in front of the podium.
