A black and white photograph of the Hon Bob Semple, his wife Margaret (right) and Jessie Sinclair nee Bain (left)) at the opening of the new concrete arch bridge in Mataura on 22 July 1939. Bob Semple was the then Minister of Public Works and officially opened the Bridge on 22 July 1939. This solidly-constructed single-span bridge replaced the one-way suspension bridge which had been there since 1868, but could no longer cope with the increasing traffic.
