An interesting and historic spot on the coast of Nelson province, South Island, Delaware Bay is situated about 18 miles from Nelson City, named after the ship Delaware which was wrecked there in 1863. The Māori Pa at the beach was the home of Hūria Mātenga (Julia Martin), the Māori chieftainess, who swam out with a life-line to the wrecked ship and enabled the crew to be saved.
