The official opening of the first Marist Novitiate in New Zealand , St Joseph Novitiate at Claremont, 10 miles from Timaru, for training of Novices for brothers of the teaching Marist order. Those present included Archbishop Redwood, who performed the ceremony, Bishop Liston(Auckland), Bishop Brodie (Christchurch) Monsignor Cahill and Monsignor Ormond (Auckland) and brother Benignus, and a crowd of 3000.
