In rapid succession Canton (now known as Guangzhou) and the former capital, Hankow (Wuhan City), fell after Japanese attack. Both cities were ravaged by huge fires started systematically by retreating Chinese troops. Upper: A peaceful view of Guangzhou and the Pearl River.
