This is the original map from the Crown Purchase Deed of Pekapeka Block, and the catalyst for war in Taranaki. In early 1859, Te Ātiawa rangatira Te Teira Mānuka offered to sell the Pekapeka Block at Waitara in north Taranaki to the Crown. The government accepted the offer.
