The stately manor, in Green Road, was built in 1897 for Walter Woods Johnston, the first Member of Parliament for the Manawatu. It remained in the family until the death of Johnston's wife in 1922. She was a staunch Catholic, and when she died the property was sold to the Society of Mary. The Society turned it into a Novitiate, a training ground for Marist Fathers and Brothers.
