Opening of Newtown School buildings in October 1939

The new school buildings were opened in October 1939. They were officially opened by Hon Peter Fraser, Minister of Education and was declared "one of the most up to date schools in the Dominion". It is described as "... a two-storeyed building to the south of the old wooden school in Riddiford Street, and is constructed on the most modern lines, with wide corridors which make it possible to open the classrooms to sun and air".

The new school, though only officially "opened" today, has been in use for several weeks. It is a two-storeyed building to the south of the old, wooden school in Riddi^ ford Street, and is constructed on the most modern lines, with wide corridors which- make it possible to open the classrooms to sun and air.  In 1940 the hospital took over the old buildings due to over crowding  "...the old school at Newtown has been taken over as an annexe to the main hospital". 

And then in 2011 the "new" block was closed.
