- Description
Pōhutu which means ‘constant splashing’ in Māori is the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere. It erupts once or twice every hour and can sometimes reach a height of 30 meters. This happens when pressurised hot water underground gets forced through a narrow opening. According to Māori mythology, geysers are a gift from the gods. Geysers are one of the attractions of Whakarewarewa, the unique geothermal Māori village in Rotorua.
