Description

This brooch is an excellent example of the 19th century practice of mounting animal teeth and bird beaks in gold or silver settings so that they could be worn as brooches, pendants and other types of personal adornment. The brooch is made from two shark teeth, mounted in nine carat gold. Presenting animal body parts as jewellery was an acceptable practice in New Zealand during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
