This medallion was awarded to F. L. Carlton from Timaru, one of the first New Zealand women to graduate as a dental nurse. In December 1920, newspapers had advertised places for 30 probationer dental nurses. In April 1921, 35 out of the 120 applicants began a two-year training programe in Wellington. To begin with, the trainees used equipment that had been used by the Dental Corps during the Great War.The first intake finished their training in 1923
