Description

Front gardens of 'Merksworth Castle' (also known as Algie's Castle) at No. 253 Hurstmere Road. To the right is the arch of the front entrance to the castle and to the left a gate (a new addition). The established garden with cabbage tree (centre) and Puka tree (left) has pathways edged with stone. (For comparison with early garden see T/5518 and T/5521). The two-storeyed baronial castle, built by Frank Savidan, with two feet thick walls of basalt quarried in Takapuna, was completed in 1926.
