The SS Britannia berthed at the end of Takapuna wharf, with a small double-masted sailing boat to the right. The piles piles standing out of the water left of centre are the remains of the first landing stage constructed in 1890. The wharf was used at low water and passengers had to scramble over the reef to get to shore. Closer to the shore was a high water landing.
