Description

Crew members stand on the deck of a spar torpedo boat, one of four such boats delivered to New Zealand in 1884-85, around the time of the Russian Scare. The boats were fitted with a long spar to which the torpedo was attached. They were intended to be used as ramming vessels, but were considered dangerous, and were never actually used. The Auckland base was at Torpedo Bay in Devonport.
