Description

The Birkenhead Medical Hospital, formerly known as The Gables. Built some time in the 1880s, the Gables was bought in 1910 by Charles Edmond Campbell who was a councillor on the Birkenhead Borough Council for many years. He sold the house about 1940 to a Sister Martin who converted it into a private maternity hospital. The Auckland Hospital Board took over in 1948 and it became the Birkenhead Obstetric Hospital.
