Description

The scow Jane Gifford moored off Orere Beach, near Orere Point, 1936. The flock of sheep in the foreground may have come from the nearby Orere River Estate. The Jane Gifford was built as a ketch-rigged deck scow by Davey Darroch at Omaha in 1908. She was named after the immigrant ship Jane Gifford, which had arrived in New Zealand in 1842. Engines were first installed in the scow Jane Gifford in 1921, and in 1931 an engine room was added to the deck between the mizzen mast and the cabin. Init...
