Description

A view of the naval camp beside the Mangatawhiri River, January 1864. This was the place where General Cameron's troops embarked when they crossed the river at the outbreak of the Waikato War on 12 July 1863 (outright hostilities began with the Battle of Koheroa five days later). In March 1863 the military road was extended from the Queen's Redoubt as far as this spot on the northern bank of the river, not far from its confluence with the Waikato. In July 1863 a landing stage was erected here...
