- Description
Portrait of Wiremu Te Morehu Maipapa Te Wheoro (1826?-1895). Te Wheoro was a chief of the Ngati Naho tribe and a relative of Tawhiao, the Māori King. He served as a captain in the militia during the Waikato War, later being promoted to major, and after the war served as an intermediary between the Government and the King movement. He was MP for Western Māori from 1879 to 1894. In some sources, Te Wheoro is said to have welcomed the Fencibles to Howick in 1847 (this may be apocryphal).
