A slab homestead with external chimney in Karekare valley, showing a settler's cottage, shed and fenced paddock, horses grazing, the stream running along the valley floor, cattle and a horse and cart on the road with The Watchman in the background. Historical note: This was the first home of the Murdoch family who arrived in Karekare in 1883. The house burnt down after four or five years.
