Horses, wagons and men on the road below Waiatarua with two cottages on the cleared hillside. Historical note: The two cottages on the hillside were built by Edwin Gash, the first in 1911 and the second shortly after.(See Song of two waters by Jeanne Wade, 1979, p.15-16, 60-61).The Legion of Frontiersmen began recruiting in New Zealand in 1911.
