Caption text: Crossing the Manukau Bar, Auckland, under sail: the scow Hawk passing the South Head outward bound. Historical note: Jack Diamond note: "'Hawk', a constant trader to the Manukau with timber from the North Auckland ports is preparing to negotiate the bar with a favourable breeze. The Manukau bar is frequently unworkable for sailing vessels for days at a time owing to the heavy seas raised there by the prevailing westerly winds."
