Full text on photo mat: 'Hotel burnt down July 4th 1894' as sub heading then further text: 'Sir George Bowen (Governor) stayed at Hotel May 1st 1868. Royal Hotel was established in 1864, and this photo given to Licensee J.F.O'Shea in 1964 by Geoffrey Roche of Waikato Historical Society.'
