The Talisman Hotel in 1901, the year that Lord Ranfurly, the 13th Governer-General of New Zealand, visited Katikati. There has been a hotel on the site since the very beginnings of the township. The first hotel was called The Uretara Hotel and was opened in 1877 by Mr. William Bell. There was some robust discussion around whether Katikati really needed a hotel which sold alcohol, but a license was eventually granted.
