- Description
Unique to New Zealand's South Island, Hooker's sea lions are behemoths. They can be as long as a small car and weigh close to half a ton. They are also formidable predators. Before we made it down to the beach, we spotted another bull in the water, stalking fur seal pups in a kelp forest near the colony. Very lucky to have seen 3 of the 6 true sea lion species in the wild. Still awaiting the Galapagos, South American and of course the even more massive Stellar.
